The National Institute for Medical research (NIMR)

NIMR is a parastatal institution responsible for carrying out and coordinating monitoring, evaluation and health research in Tanzania. The Mwanza Centre is one of NIMR's five regional institutes, specialising in research on HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STI). As well as running the Kisesa cohort, it collaborated in the study which showed a beneficial effect of syndromic management of STI on HIV incidence(see reference, and in a long-term evaluation of the effects of educational interventions on sexual behaviour (REF FOR THIS?).

Bugando Medical Centre

Bugando Medical Centre (BMC) is the consultant and teaching hospital for Tanzania's Lake Zone, owned by the Tanzania Episcopal Conference (TEC), and run by a Board of Governors appointed by TEC and the Government of Tanzania. The hospital has a capacity of 850 beds and runs undergraduate courses in medicine. It has been included in the National Care and Treatment Plan as an advanced outlet under the Quick Start Plan for the Round 3 Global Fund project, benefiting from installation of laboratory equipment for performing CD4 counts and other tests needed for delivering ART under the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). BMC has previously collaborated in Kisesa cohort research by providing laboratory services for HIV testing.

London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) is Europe's leading Schoolof Public Health with an outstanding international record in HIV research. It is a long standing partner of NIMR in this field, and supporting the Kisesa cohort study since 1996, by training project staff, providing technical advice on study protocols, assistance with analyses and publication, and links to international bodies such as WHO.


Tumaini is a program under the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania, diocese of East of Lake Victoria partially funded by Care International. The program covers Mwanza Region and beyond. One of the areas they are working is the Kisesa Ward. Program activities include: encouraging the use of the Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) centre in Kisesa set up by NIMR; facilitating referral of people living with HIV/AIDS ( PLWHA) to Bugando Medical Centre (BMC), providing home based care services, providing nutritional support to the PLWHA, supporting orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs) and households with such children.
